Mrs. Cook, our District Social Worker tells us that she sees anxiety show up in a variety of ways for our students including physical symptoms like chronic headaches and stomach aches, or chronic absenteeism, avoidance of things once loved, and loneliness. She notes that many of these concerns are direct effects from living through the Covid pandemic. "We were forced into isolation, which teens do not naturally cope well with, and now we expect them to face many things to which they have built up a resistance. These resistant habits grew over the space of at least two years, so undoing this through building new habits and mental models of functioning may take some time and patience. Learning strategies to manage anxiety and even learning to use it for our good is critical for all of us!" She believes as many as one in three students at South Summit are dealing with some sort of anxiety. For some it's crippling and preventing them from living their lives. For others it may not be as serious, but it is impacting their lives on a daily basis. We invite parents and students to join us for an evening focused on resiliency. Mental Health Counselor, Jeff Gregson, will present manageable ways to cope with anxiety. Plan to attend, it'll be an experience you won't forget. #WeAreSouthSummit #JeffGregson

As a convert to South Summit, Mrs. Earl grew up being one of the Wildcats biggest rivals: a Park City Miner. However, she now proudly admits that her heart belongs to South Summit. She and her family moved to Kamas 14 years ago and she's been teaching at South Summit Middle School for three years. "My favorite thing about South Summit, besides my students, is the feeling of community and a positive work environment with caring staff members," she says. When DeEtte isn't teaching sixth grade language arts and theater, she enjoys reading and playing the piano. She also loves to spend time with her husband, kids and grandkids. They like to go camping, riding their RZRs, hiking, boating, fishing, traveling and playing board games. #WeAreSouthSummit #SouthSummitMiddle #StaffShoutout #FootlooseTheMusical #FootlooseYouthEdition #LetsDance

Who knew that carving ostrich and goose eggs was a thing? School Bus Driver Barbara Burkinshaw knew. That's just one of the cool things she does in her spare time. She also does other cool things like sandblasting and engraving gourds, wood, and other mediums. She crochets, sews and crafts also. "I enjoy many hobbies like my horses, my yard and greenhouse. Love to travel, go on cruises and fun adventures in our side by side," she says. Spending time with her family is a priority, as she's a mother of two and a grandma to six. She and her husband have been in the valley for over 20 years, after moving from South Jordan and they love the mountains and the beauty here. This is Barbara's third year driving the school bus for South Summit. She loves the kids and the funny things they say. She claims that we have some of the best kids around. And we're not going to argue with that! #WeAreSouthSummit #StaffShoutout

School Bus Safety Reminder! With spring finally here, everyone's excited to get where they're going. Please remember to watch for children – they can come from all directions, especially if they’re running late. Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is preparing to stop, load or unload children. Drivers should slow down and prepare to stop. Red flashing lights and extended stop arms mean the bus has stopped and that children are getting on or off. Drivers must STOP and WAIT until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop arms are withdrawn and the bus begins moving again before they can continue driving. When in doubt, STOP! If you see a motorist passing a school bus while its lights are flashing please call Summit County Sheriffs Office Dispatch. Get a vehicle description and license plate number if you can.

Students can and do make a difference in their schools. This year Coy and Isabella changed the dress code after taking it to the school board. They are this year's student school board members. Last year's student board members, Adam and Emma, started the dress code conversation and Coy and Isabella were able to solidify the changes this year. You have the power to make changes like this too. An avid outdoorsman who has a way with connecting with youth, Mr. Dahl has been counseling students for nearly two decades. After teaching Spanish for 10 years he decided to make the switch to counseling and it stuck. He jokes that he works well with youth because he never fully matured himself, but whatever the reason, we're glad to have him here. When Dan isn't guiding students to success, he is most-likely outside doing something. He likes to hike, camp, fly-fish, backpack, and build boats. Sometimes his wife, and now grown kids will join him. He also has a granddaughter that he loves to spend time with. #WeAreSouthSummit #SSHSWildcats #StaffShoutout

Save the date! On May 8th we have Jeff Gregson joining us to present Anxiety Answers. Jeff is a Mental Health Counselor who is certified in the Teaching-Family Model (parenting model used by many youth programs), and trained in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (method of therapy that promotes rapid change for many issues). He's worked in international therapeutic boarding schools, an adolescent psychiatric hospital, and worked with families in their homes from LA to New York. He's also been featured on KSL radio, completed aftercare counseling for the TV program Hoarders, and worked with various high profile clients from London to Singapore. Despite all of that, he says his passion lies in helping his neighbors.
