SSHS is inviting all Veterans to their assembly this Friday. We want to honor all who have served.
Last week many of our Spanish Dual Immersion students participated in lessons celebrating Día de Muertos. It's a Mexican holiday celebrated on Nov 1-2 to remember and honor the dead. People build alters in their homes and decorate graves. The idea is that the souls of the dead who are remembered by their family and friends are able to visit the land of the living for one night each year and enjoy the offerings that have been left for them.
People decorate with calacas (skeletons) and even wear the skeleton costume/makeup on this day as part of the celebration. Altars are often called ofrendas because they are full of “offerings” to the dead. The traditional elements of the altar include photographs of the dead, candles, cempasúchil flowers (marigolds), skeletons, sugar skulls, and Pan de Muertos. People also leave special objects or favorite foods on the altar, fruit, water, and salt.
Our 5th grade students built an ofrenda with all the traditional elements, dressed in the catrín (skeleton makeup), and gave a bilingual presentation to each of the 5th grade classes about the holiday.
