    Dr. Shad E. Sorenson
    Superintendent of Schools

South Summit School District strives to make the world a better place, by positively impacting each and every student through the educational process.  Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”  We live in an ever- changing society and quality education for our students is more important today than ever in our history.  I have truly enjoyed my association with the students of this district and feel of their genuine goodness and character every day.  Our mighty “South Summit Wildcats” are the best and they deserve the very best!

What an incredible honor to work in this beautiful valley and to be part of a team of educators who profoundly influence our students.  The term “educator” is broadly defined in my vocabulary.  I truly know that bus drivers, cooks, secretaries, custodians and paraprofessionals are also teachers in their realm of influence.  Quality education could not happen in our district without their service and support to our excellent faculty and administration.  I can confidently say our faculty and administrators are second to none in their dedication and commitment to an exceptional educational experience for our students.

Public education can be a complicated thing. States set certain criteria, as well do local school boards and administrators. Finally the classroom teacher gets a say as well. In a perfect world everything would align perfectly. I recognize that sometimes they don't.  At the end of the day what is most important is what happens in the classroom and with students. Tests and data matter, and has its place, but quality TEACHING is the true focus in our district.

Teaching is one of those rare professions where you teach every other profession. My focus as superintendent is to enable educators to empower students. I am committed to advocating for the tools and resources educators need to do great things.

“If your plan is for 1 year, plant rice; if your plan is for 10 years, plant trees; if your plan is for 100 years, educate children.”  - Confucius
My philosophy is that education in this world begins at birth and ends with death. Public education and the post-high technical, college and university systems have the opportunity to empower students with the skills, competencies and motivation to purse life-long learning and to be productive in their personal, professional and civic responsibilities. I am not a believer in silos in this educational system, meaning I see the pk-16 (pre-school to college graduation) experience as comprehensive.  Our faculty, staff and administration embrace the important role we have, in supporting parents, in the preparation of our students’ college and career readiness pathway.

My personal mission statement is to make a positive difference; now!  I believe making a positive difference in this district requires me to take A.C.T.I.O.N on the principles of (A)ccountability, (C)ommunication, (T)eaching, (I)nclusion, (O)pportunity and (N)oticed for Excellence.

It truly takes a village to raise a child.  (I think it’ll take this village to raise a superintendent!)  Achieving the full-vision of the district’s mission and goals requires the participation and support of every resident living in the South Summit School District boundary.  We all have a responsibility to ensure that our children have access and are fully engaged in their educational journey.  There are so many ways for community members to be involved and make a difference in our students’ lives.  Please contact me or another administrator and let us know of your willingness to support our mission through volunteerism, resources or other means.

The Kamas Valley has a rich heritage of greatness and the best is yet to come!  I am humbled by the opportunity to serve as the Superintendent of Schools for this community that I love and which has given me so much.  I am committed to honor and capitalize on our traditions of greatness.  I will be equally focused and work to address areas needing improvement and innovation.  I look forward to working with you in this most important endeavor.
